EAL (English as an Additional Language), this is when English is not the child’s  first language; they may speak one or more other languages at home, although not necessarily fluently. We recognise and value the knowledge and experience multilingual and EAL learners bring to our school to enable an all inclusive culture.

Strategies of support: We offer many strategies within the learning environment to support our EAL learners, such as:

• Meeting with the learner and parents/carers before they start at Waseley Hills High School
• Working with the EAL learner of preference in seating plan
• Mrs N Joshi works with the EAL child and family to prepare a Personalised Provision Plan which outlines the home language, country of origin, barrier to learning which the child faces and strategies to support
• Teachers plan more group work to build positive relationship, also to support with developing communication skills and friendship
• Adaptive teaching style
• Have weekly check-ins with Ms Joshi during the EAL intervention to learn more about the child, as every child is unique.
• Maintain the use of home language, using translators
• Encourage learners to access the enrichments activities to build team-work skills and raise their confidence to communicate
